The PWHL Draft took place last night and was immediately followed by the league's second-ever awards show. Hard Rock Hotel and Casino provided the backdrop for the last 48 hours of PWHL events. With all the chaos surrounding the league, as players move out west to Seattle and Vancouver, it was nice for the league to take a brief pause.
It's been rough for the Charge organization and even harder on its fan base, as they have recently lost players to the new expansion team or have witnessed their favourites sign elsewhere. Ottawa has arguably been the team hit the hardest when it comes to losing players, but moving to another team out east in the Montréal Victoire, you'll have a much more positive group, especially after the reveal of this year's award winners. Montréal Victoire didn’t just show up to the PWHL Awards — they owned the event. Captain Marie-Philip Poulin was crowned the Billie Jean King MVP and Forward of the Year. The 34-year-old Poulin, from Beauceville, Que., led the league with 19 goals and finished fourth with 26 points in 30 games. Poulin was also a finalist for the MVP and top forward awards in the inaugural 2024 PWHL season, which Toronto's Natalie Spooner won. It’s a fitting end to a dominant campaign in which she also earned IIHF Female Player of the Year and MVP at the Women’s World Championship with a tournament-leading 12 points (four goals, eight assists). Linemate and partner in life, Laura Stacey, won the Hockey For All Award given to the player "who made the greatest impact in their community." The duo weren't the only individuals taking home hardware from the Quebec-based team. Ann-Renée Desbiens stood tall in net all year and was named Goaltender of the Year, thanks to 15 wins, a 1.86 GAA and .932 save percentage — tops among starters. Behind the bench, Montreal's Kori Cheverie won coach of the year after leading the Victoire to first place in the PWHL standings with a 12-7-3-8 record. Poulin and Desbiens were named to the All-Star First Team, while Amanda Boulier was recognized as an Intact Impact player for the squad. Other big winners included: Renata Fast (Toronto) – Defender of the Year, leading the league in hits and ice time. Sarah Fillier (New York)– Rookie of the Year, tied for the league lead in points and led all players in power-play goals. In total, Montréal took home four major awards, an emphatic statement from a franchise that’s not just winning games but rewriting the league’s story.
