PC: TWU MEDIA Trinity Western University women's hockey kicks off its season tonight with a pair of home games against the University of Alberta Pandas. The Spartans started last season ranked 31st among 35 teams in Canada and finished the year just outside of the top 10 at 11th. We sat down with Head Coach Peter Hay to discuss season expectations, goals, and more. What’s the team identity you want to establish early this season, and how will it set the tone for the year?
“It’s the same as last year. We want to be the hardest-working and toughest to play against. It’s all about how we prepare on and off the ice so that playing that way comes naturally.” You’ve brought in some new faces—what impact do you expect from the incoming players, and how do they complement the returning core? “There’s a huge percentage of returning players. We have some outstanding young rookies, but the veteran players will lead the way. There are some young future all-star rookies who will contribute to our strong depth. The new players are fitting in well, so it's really exciting.” What areas of the game did you focus on improving most during the offseason? “For us, it was the smaller details: special teams, faceoffs, line matching - being able to put the proper players on the ice at the proper time.” Is there someone on your roster who might surprise fans and emerge as a key contributor? “Several players are ready to take the next step. Ella Boon and Presleigh Giesbrecht are prepared to take the lead of the d-core and bring it to another level.” What’s your message to the fans as the team heads into a new season? “We are prepared to deliver a fast-paced, intense game that fans can enjoy. This year is a real opportunity not just to make the playoffs but to fight for the championship. Many players have been with the program since day one. Our nine seniors have gone through lots of challenges, so it would be nice for them to leave as champions.” Follow the Spartans all season long on their social media accounts and by visiting their website at gospartans.ca
